A NOTE FROM PASTOR BOB
When I was standing before the Board of Ministry interviewing for my orders of ordination something happened that was a life-changer for me. All my life I have been a doer. One of the stories I can relate to well in the Scriptures is the one where Jesus visits Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42). Martha is banging the pots and pans around in the kitchen working to prepare the evening meal. She’s tending to all the things needing attention. Her sister Mary is not helping at all. In fact, Mary is doing what Martha believes to be the unthinkable; she’s doing nothing and merely sitting at Jesus feet.
One of the questions I was asked by the Board of Ministry was, “Should the church ever rest?” My quick response built upon my own personality as a do-er was, “No! The Kingdom work never stops.” One of the board members helped me to see a greater truth. At four foot seven, she stood up, leaned over the table, pointed her boney finger at me and said, “Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! God rested. Why can’t you?”
Friends, life is complicated, fast paced and sometimes feels never ending. When all we do is work and stay busy we miss the small things of God. God says we are to rest and when we do, we see God everywhere.
