Outcast
Having left Galilee for the last time,
Jesus ventures forth to Samaria, a
land inhabited by known enemies
of the Jews. Entering the village,
he is mesmerized by a group of ten
who plead for his help. The frayed
tunics and scruffy beards cannot hide
the erupting lesions that disfigure
each one. Leprosy has ravaged their
bodies and destroyed their lives.
This contagious and incurable
bacteria assails the skin and defeats
the spirit. Banished from friends and
family, the little contact they receive
is absorbed upon the announcement
of their medical status. This audible
label further destroys their dignity.
“When he saw them he said, ‘Go
show yourselves to the priests.’ And
as they went they were cleaned.”
Faith leads to trust and trust leads to
healing. The lepers obediently left
to locate the priests, without being
cured. “They are healed along
the way.” One of them, when he saw he
was made well, came back, praising
Jesus in a loud voice. He threw himself
at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. The attitude
of gratitude makes a difference. Humbleness
in mercy allows the believer to appreciate
God’s grace. Have you thanked your Lord
today for the many blessings in your life?
