Lenten Devotional: February 20, 2026

by Rev. Elyse Nielsen

Fasting for Lent

Read: Matthew 6:17-18 NIV

But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Fasting for Lent is a common practice. Historically, people give up decadence like chocolate or alcohol, luxury items like spending extra money on boat rentals or vacations. These modern- day expressions stem from a period of abstinence where Jesus fasted and prayed as he was tempted in the desert. Fasting is meant to shift from the physical to the spiritual. Fasting provides an opportunity for us to intentionally rely on Jesus who is our true food.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, this Lent help us to receive You as our Bread of Life and our Cup of Salvation. Amen.
