The Fast God Chooses
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 58:6–11 NRSV
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice…
to share your bread with the hungry…
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly…
The Lord will guide you continually…”
Reflection: We have to admit that sometimes we miss the point of fasting. We can become focused on what we are giving up—certain foods, comforts, or habits—and measure the season by how well we are succeeding at denial. In those moments, fasting becomes about our effort rather than God’s invitation. Isaiah reminds us that God is far less concerned with the sacrifice itself and far more concerned with the condition of our heart. Fasting is meant to open us—to God, to others, and to the needs we might otherwise ignore.
When we approach fasting with that openness, we begin to see its deeper purpose. It creates space for God to work within, softening our hearts, redirecting our attention, and drawing us toward compassion and generosity. The promise in this passage is not that we will become more disciplined, but that God will bring light, healing, guidance, and renewal. Fasting is not ultimately about what we surrender; it is about what God restores. When we remember that, the season becomes less about deprivation and more about transformation.
Prayer: Gracious God,
Forgive us when we focus more on what we are giving up than on what you desire to do within us. Open our heart during this season of fasting, that we may receive your light, your healing, and your guidance. Shape us into a person who reflects your love in the world. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
