Lenten Devotional: February 28, 2026

by Rev. Elyse Nielsen

Scripture Reading:

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good."

Reflection:

Betrayal is an ancient sin. It's nothing new but nevertheless still so hurtful and damaging. When people betray us, we may internalize it and think maybe God is the same. Joseph could have conflated people's nature for God's nature given how poorly he was treated in his life, particularly by his family. He heard his brothers making plans on how to either kill him, leave him for dead, and then finally sell him into slavery over what must be the darkest picnic portrayed in literature. Joseph was faithful, and God proved, over time—a long time—20 years, that He would be true to His nature. Despite Joseph's circumstances, God was faithful to provide, restore, and bring good outcomes to those who love Him.

This Lent, may God reveal to you, in a mighty way, His faithfulness despite people's tendency to betray. Amen.
