Lenten Devotional: March 13, 2023

by James Wilber

Perseverance is an essential quality for any Christian who wants to grow in faith. It is the ability to endure through difficulties with the confidence that God is in control and will help us overcome. During the season of Lent, we reflect on Jesus' perseverance as he faced temptation, suffering, and ultimately death on the cross. We are also reminded of our own need for perseverance as we strive to live a life that glorifies God.

One of the most significant examples of perseverance in the Bible is found in the book of Job. Job was a faithful servant of God who faced unimaginable suffering, losing his family, his wealth and his personal health. Despite this, Job remained faithful and did not curse God. In the end, God restored everything to Job and blessed him even more abundantly than before.

Job's perseverance teaches us several essential lessons. First, we must remember that suffering is a part of life. Nobody can avoid it, no matter how faithful they are. Second, we must remember that God is always with us, even in the darkest moments of our lives. Finally, we must remember that God is in control and that his plans for us are good, even if we can't see them at the moment.

Jesus also teaches us about perseverance through his example. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed to his Father, knowing that he was about to face excruciating pain and death on the cross. Yet, he did not give up his faith. Instead, he followed God's will, trusting that his Father's plan was perfect.

As we reflect on Jesus' perseverance, we can draw strength and courage from his example. We can trust that God is with us in our trials and that his plan for us is perfect. Now we can't all be just like Jesus, but we should strive to better ourselves and avoid temptation. So go out into the world this season and stay faithful.
