Lenten Devotional: March 3, 2026

by Nancy Gainor

Cascade

Jesus enters the elaborate

home of Simon the Pharisee.

Ornate furnishings occupy the

lavish complex of this wealthy

man. Reclining on a couch,

feet stretched out, Jesus

begins to engage in conversation

with his dining companion. The

enticing scent of bread and

succulent lamb drift through the

air. Abruptly, the door flies open,

and a known prostitute advances

carrying a lovely, intricately fashioned

alabaster jar. “As she stood behind

Jesus at his feet weeping, she began to

wet His feet with her tears. Then she

wiped them with her hair, kissed them

and poured perfume on them.” Cascades

of tears, expensive perfume, and love

anoint her beloved Jesus. Shunned by

the spectators, her only focus is on her

precious Savior. Outraged, and embarrassed

by the interruption, Simon’s reaction is

met with a rebuke, for Jesus compares

the adoration of this scandalous woman to

the lack of respect shown by Him in his host.

“Then Jesus said to her, your sins are forgiven.

Your faith has saved you, go in peace.” Free

from the bondage of sin, she is able to go forth

and live a life secure in the mercy and favor

of a Father who loves her unconditionally.

Pour out your heart upon the One who loves

you dearly, precious one, for mercy awaits

those who seek forgiveness, regardless of the

sin. Let Him cascade His grace upon you.

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

This Lenton season, lean into your merciful Father who adores you. Confess your sin and release the heavy baggage that prevents you from living your life to the fullest nestled in the palm of His hand. The power of prayer changes everything.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I confess at times I have faltered from the path you desire for me. You intimately know the essence of my soul, mind, and being and yet your unconditional love surrounds me. Your sacrifice on the cross and mercy brings me hope and a deep desire to serve you in joy and gratitude. Guide me in the direction that leads me to your light. Amen.
