PRELUDE

"I Rest In The Lord" by Franklin Ritter

Rick Nay, Organ

WELCOME

Rev. Margaret Rountree

*GREETING

Pastor: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.

People: God's mercy endures forever.

*OPENING PRAYER

O God, Maker of everything and Judge of all that You have made, from the dust of the earth You have formed us and from the dust of death You would raise us up. By the redemptive power of the cross, create in us clean hearts and put within us a new spirit, that we may repent of our sins and lead lives worthy of your calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

*PRAISE & WORSHIP Praise Team

"Beautiful Things"

"I Surrender All"

SCRIPTURE READING Kerry O'Reilly

—Matthew 6: 1-6 (NLT)

Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

CHORAL ANTHEM

"Restore My Joy" by Cindy Berry

Chancel Choir

SCRIPTURE READING Kerry O'Reilly

—Psalm 51: 1-3 (NLT)

Have mercy on me, O God,

because of your unfailing love.

Because of your great compassion,

blot out the stain of my sins.

Wash me clean from my guilt.

Purify me from my sin.

For I recognize my rebellion;

it haunts me day and night.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Teach us wisdom in the secret places of our hearts, O God. Speak truth to our spirits, that we may honestly face the sins that separate us from the abundant love You offer us each day. Hear our prayers, that we may return to You and be restored to the joy of Your forgiveness and grace.

SERMON

"Darkness or Light?" Rev. Bob Martin

PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless in your judgement. Amen.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE ASHES

Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth. Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our morality and penitence, so that we may remember that only by your gracious gift are we given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior, Amen.

*IMPOSITION OF ASHES
